Saturday time of retreat

Saturday Retreat....
In order for each of us to be able to say “thank you God”, we need to forgive ourselves and others.   The Forgiveness Prayer exercise today is an easy one but a thorough exercise.  Do not rush this exercise.    Make a cup of tea or get a glass of water and sit in a comfortable chair somewhere (oooh... like outside on the back deck!)
Fold a piece of paper in half lengthwise.   On the left hand side  write the name of the person and  what they have done to you.  Add anyone you can think of on this list…. From the driver who didn’t stop to let you cross the road to the sister that forgot your birthday.
The more we forgive the more healing can be done.

Name of Person                                                    Forgiveness

When you are done writing the names on the left hand side of your paper, start writing on the right hand side this phrase

Dear _________, I do forgive you for _____________ and I set you free.  I do forgive myself for feeling hurt/ angry/  violated and I do set myself free.

Wait until you feel different in anyway when you think about that person.  Then go to the next name on your list.  Sometimes the list is a few names and sometimes the list is pages long.   But remember,  the more we forgive the more of God’s love we share.

End your  Forgiveness Prayer exercise with this  prayer:
God of all Graciousness,  I thank you that I can come to you with heavy burdens and You take all my burdens  from me.  Thank you Great God that you have taken my sorrows and anger and replace them with Your forgiveness and love.   May I too be the love of God to all those that I meet this day.  Assist me as you assisted the early Apostles and Church leaders to find blessings and opportunities even in the most challenging experiences.  In Jesus’ Name I pray.   Amen.

Many blessings!

Friday Retreating

Happy Friday.   Happy 1 June 2012! The day at the end of some people's work week.  The day at the end of students'  classes.  The day at the beginning of the weekend.   Isn't it amazing how this is all the same day yet we each have such a different perspective on the day.

Yesterday Old Son was sick again.   The same fever, headache, sore throat that he seems to get so frequently.  This sounds like one continual Mononeucleosis bout.  Many prayers for healing and diagnosis.
Husband was on the roat to Neepawa and Winnipegosis for meetings.   Many prayers for those who travel and have meetings.

This day remember to take time to meditate and pray in God's presence.

Friday Retreat.....
Prayer:   Great God,  help me to forgive continually so that I can come into Your presence with a joyful heart.  Amen.

Read  St. Matthew 18:  21 - 35

A story of forgiveness.   Peter listens to Jesus telling the disciples the steps to take when someone hurts you,  then Peter asks, “Master, how many times do I forgive a brother or sister who hurts me? Seven?”

Peter thought he was being very generous  in suggesting that we need to forgive seven times.    To ask for repentance from God,  according to the Laws,  one must:
1.  admit the sin to God (confession)
2.  regret what one has done before God
3.  resolve not to repeat the sin.
This is called teshuva (repentance).   However,  sins against another person requires two more steps:
4.  asking forgiveness of the person
5.  making restitution

Jesus turns to Peter and says, “Seven!  Hardly.  Try seventy times seven”.      Limitless.  Limitless forgiveness.    Repeating these five steps over and over again.

Researchers have found time and again that those who forgive and learn to forgive have a much healthier life and a positive life.    Makes sense doesn’t it?   If we learn to forgive and ask for forgiveness,   a burden of hurt and negativeness is not sitting on our shoulders.

Then Jesus tells the Disciples a story about a King and a Servant  to illustrate Forgiveness and not Forgiving.

Prayer:   Thank You O Lord our God that You continually forgive us each time we sin or hurt others.  We thank You that You love us for all eternity.  May we share Your great love with our family and friends and neighbours this day. We ask this in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Many blessings!

Holy Week Wednesday

Holy Week.   We live out our lives as normal during Holy Week but as we get closer and closer to Maundy Thursday and Good Friday we know that Easter is soon.   For those who are not Christian,  this week means stocking up on groceries because the stores will be closed on Friday,  Sunday,  and possibly Monday.     Being prepared.   This is what the Season of Lent has been all about.... preparing ourselves for the Glorious Resurrection.... looking inwardly at our lives and wanting to make ourselves the best we can for God.
For myself this means praying many prayers of Forgiveness.
I get extremely impatient with Minister's  preaching bad sermons because they spend no time in reading and meditation and prayer on the weekly Scriptures ... and then wrote their sermon late Saturday night.  I get saddened with Sessions that have no vision to let the community know way in advance of Holy Week Worship times.   This is our Holy Week!   Let everyone know about it in the community!
A friend of mine from Sherwood Park frequently says to me, "But Lorna,  perhaps these people are all that they can be because they are not listening to God!  You are trying to push them into being something they are not."   Too true.   My impatience leads me to being cranky and negative.  Time for Prayers of Forgiveness,  meditating upon God's Word,  eating chocolate,  doing Tai Chi, being with the Museum Volunteers,  and quilting helps to alleviate my crankiness.  Hosanna and thanks that we can come to God with our prayers of Forgivenss!

Devotional.....
Prayer:  We come to ask Your forgiveness O Lord,  and we seek forgiveness from each other.  Sometimes we build up walls instead of bridges to peace, and we ask Your forgiveness,  O Lord.  Sometimes we hurt by what we do to others.  Sometimes we hurt with words that are untrue.  Sometimes we cause others pain by what we fail to do, and we ask Your forgiveness, O Lord.   For the times when we’ve been rude and selfish,  for the times when we have been unkind, and for the times we refused to help our friends in need, we ask Your forgiveness O Lord.    Amen.

Read  St. Matthew 26:  14 – 16

Judas goes to the Chief Priests and asks them what they would give to him if he delivers Jesus.   WHAT?    Why would Judas do something like this?  Why would he go against his friend and teacher?   We never know why Judas betrays Jesus.  It could have been Judas’ understanding of Messiah was different than what Jesus was declaring as Messiah.  Perhaps Judas understood Jesus to be  a political saviour and lead a revolt against Rome.   This was not the Messiah Jesus taught the Disciples that he would become.
Thirty pieces of silver comes from the prophet Zechariah 11: 12.  Thirty pieces of silver was the payment for the rejected shepherd.  A small sum that was only a token gesture of repayment. Zechariah the Prophet is bring up the image of thirty pieces of silver from Exodus 21: 32.  This is the price of silver paid to a master whose slave is gored by an ox. Judas did not betray Jesus because he needed the money.   Yet,  for a very small insignificant sum,  Judas begins on the road of deception and betrayal of Jesus.
Sometimes small lies and small deceptions grow into life sized sins.   Today,  take time to say Prayers of Forgiveness.   Through Jesus’ death and resurrection,  we are already forgiven.  Yet,  it is only through looking at our lives and asking for forgiveness can we receive a true cleansing and become new again.
Prayer of Forgiveness:    In order for each of us to be able to say “thank you God”, we need to forgive ourselves and others.   The Forgiveness Prayer exercise today is an easy one but a thorough exercise.

Many blessings!

From Wednesday to Thursday Night, read  St. Matthew 26: 1 - 75
Pray:   Lamb of God,  You take away the sin of the world,  have mercy upon us.  Lamb of God,  You take away the sins from my heart,  have mercy upon me.  Lamb of God,  You take away the sin of the world, forgive us our sins.  Lamb of God, You take away the sin of the world,   grant us Your peace.   As we live out our life in Your name today,  help us to ask ourselves “What have I done for Christ?”    “What am I doing for Christ today?”  What ought I to do for You today”?    Lamb of God,  You take away the sin of the world,  grant us Your love and peace.   Amen

Friday Retreat

Fridays are always neat.  Here in Brandon,  we wear red shirts in support of our Military.   There is a wonderful organization called Brandon Salutes that gives our community a memory and reminder  of our Military.

Brandon is also raising funds for a new Veterans Memorial.   For $100.00,   a Brandon Veteran's name
can be added onto a Memorial plaque.   I have three uncles that served in WW2.  My cousin paid for all three names to be added onto the Memorial plaque so that our family history is saved somewhere.  How neat is that!

It is awesome when community groups and family come together in joyous work.   But sometimes people and Churches and lack of computer knowledge creates  an anger in our souls that is not good for us nor anyone else.   Thank goodness for prayer!

 Devotional --
Prayer:    Almighty God,  help me to forgive those people and situations that make me angry or upset.   May I offer these people or situations up to You in prayer……..
Lord have mercy upon me.      Forgive me God,  for the times I have forgotten to do something.  Forgive me Lord,  for the time I have not done something I should.    Forgive me Lord,  for the times I have hurt others.     Lord, have mercy upon me and grant me Your peace.  Amen.

Read:  St. Matthew 5: 21- 26

Anger.  Who among us has ever been rip-roaring angry at someone?  Jesus  tells the disciples if they have ever been rip-roaring angry with their family member or a friend or acquaintance to go to that person and ask forgiveness.   During the Lord’s Supper, there is something called the “Passing of the Peace”.  This is the time when we look back at our life and if we find that we are angry or upset or ticked off with a Church member or friend or family member or community acquaintance,  we need to go and ask their forgiveness.   For the disciples,  Jesus says for them to leave their offering at the altar,  go find their brother,  ask for forgiveness, then offer your gift to God.   We can not approach God until we have asked forgiveness from the person who has caused us harm or whom we have caused harm.
And what happens if we do not ask for forgiveness?  Then we will be separated from the love of God.

Prayer:   Almighty and Loving God,  please dissolve all feelings, thoughts, and patterns of anger in my soul.  Please sweep away all  my impatience,  struggle, and suffering that resides in my consciousness.   God of all Majesty,  turn my frustration and anger into inspiration and enthusiastic action.     Steer me in the direction where my actions will become actualize so that I can experience Your healing and Your Good News.   This I ask in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

Many blessings!
